Getting professional photos of your dog is such a special moment! Whether it’s at a studio or out in nature either in the gardens or iconic Canberra locations, a little preparation can make the experience smoother and more fun for both of you. Here’s a more detailed look at how to get your pup ready to shine:
Groom and Tidy Up
Grooming is an important step to make sure your dog looks their best. Give them a brush to remove loose fur, and if needed, schedule a bath a day or two before the session. Clean up any eye boogers, but it doesn't need to be perfect as I can remove it during the editing process.
For fluffy dogs or dogs with longer coats, you might want to visit a groomer for a tidy trim. Make sure to book in your grooming session around 2 weeks before your session. You don't want to have the grooming done the day before in case a mishap happens at the groomer.
Also, don’t forget to clean their paws and trim their nails too—those little details make a big difference in close-up photos!
Bring Treats and Toys
Treats and toys are essential for keeping your dog engaged during the session.
At the consultation and planning session we would have discussed what drives your dog, what motivates them.
If they are food motivated, make sure the come a bit hungry to their session and bring treats to motivate them. Choose high-value treats they absolutely love, maybe something special they don’t get every day.
If they are more toy driven or ball driven, then make sure to bring their favourite toy, whether it’s a squeaky ball or a tug rope, can help capture their attention and bring out their playful side. If your dog is motivated by sounds, squeaky toys or even whistles can work wonders.
Burn Off Energy First
A quick walk or play session a few hours before your pet photography session can help your dog feel calmer and more cooperative. If your dog tends to have a lot of energy, a longer session might be a good idea. Just make sure they’re not completely worn out—you want them relaxed, and not have their tongue hanging out everywhere.
Be Prepared for the Unexpected
Dogs can be unpredictable, and that’s part of their charm! Pack a little kit with essentials like water, a collapsible water bowl, poo bags, a brush and a towel (just in case).
Make sure to come to your session with your dog in a collar and lead. If you like, you can also bring a long line which we can use to capture the action shots so they have a bit more freedom to run freely. If you don't have one, let me know as I can bring one along with me. I usually have a long line and a slip lead handy in the car.
Being prepared helps the session run smoothly and keeps everyone, especially your dog, happy.
Relax and Enjoy It
On the day of the session, all you need to do is just turn up, have fun and enjoy your pet photography session.
Your dog picks up on your vibes, so staying calm and positive will help them feel at ease. Trust me as your photographer to work with your dog’s natural energy and quirks. Remember, some of the best photographs come from those unscripted, candid moments that truly show your dog’s personality.
A little planning goes a long way in making your dog’s photo session a fun and memorable experience. From choosing the right time to packing treats and toys, these simple steps ensure your pup has the best chance to shine in front of the camera. So relax, enjoy the day, and let your dog steal the spotlight—they’re already a star in your eyes!
