We all wish our pets could stay with us forever. That’s the hard truth and we never want to think about the times without them. National Pet Day is more than just an excuse to share a cute photo (though you absolutely should). It’s a moment to pause and really think about what they mean to us and celebrate them. Our pets fill spaces in our lives that we didn’t even realise were empty. And for some, like myself, they fill a huge space in our lives. My dogs James, Pippa and Rosie are my family. I live on my own, with them, so they are my family.
They’re with us through it all — the big life moments like heartbreak, celebrations, the sad times, the happy times or those nights when sleep doesn’t come easily. But they’re also there for the quiet, everyday things: the sleepy morning cuddles, the sound of their paws pitter pattering behind us from room to room, the way they somehow just know when we need comfort, without us saying a word. Especially these last few days where I've had a really hard day and I was very emotional, they gave me comfort, they gave me love.
And as much as we love them, there’s one thing we can never change — time. Somehow I feel like time is going faster as I grow older too. They grow up too fast, they slow down sooner than we’re ready for, and sometimes we catch ourselves wishing we could freeze them in this moment forever, just as they are right now.
That’s exactly where I come in. As a pet photographer, my job goes far beyond taking pretty photos. I capture the real stuff — the messy, funny, heartwarming stories that make your pet your pet. The way they love to play, their quirky characteristics, the cheeky glint in their eyes, the bond they share with you that’s impossible to explain but instantly felt.
So many pet owners come to me with a worried look and say, “They’re a bit older now,” or, “They never sit still,” or, “They’re a bit nervous with strangers.” And every time, I tell them the same thing: That’s exactly why we’re doing this. These quirks, these fleeting moments, they’re the very things you’ll want to hold onto. Because when you look back, it’s not the perfect poses that will mean the most — it’s the memories of who they truly were, those moments with you that shows your connection and bond to them.
This National Pet Day, let’s celebrate them even more than we already do everyday. Give them an extra cuddle, sneak them their favourite treat, or take them on an adventure to their favourite spot. And if your heart has been telling you it’s time to capture their story, trust that feeling. You’ll never regret having too many memories — only not having enough.
