Canberra is the capital city of Australia, although to those outside of Australia some thinks that Sydney or Melbourne is the capital. Yes it's a much smaller city than Sydney or Melbourne, and yes, people like to joke nothing happens here and after 8pm everything is closed - but that was back in the old days and not so true now.
It's a fantastic place if you love the outdoors and since I am a dog photographer who likes to photograph outdoors, it's a great place! There's lots of beautiful walks around Canberra, nature reserves, trails and mountains. This is why Canberra is sometimes called the Bush Capital. I am always finding new locations or hidden parks or gardens even though I have lived here for 25+ years.
Because of the beautiful nature around Canberra, it's a great place for a dog photographer like me!! I love photographing dogs outdoors in Canberra as there are so many choices of locations with stunning iconic Canberra views as the backdrops for the photos.
Here are some of the reasons why:
1. There are beautiful parks and gardens all over Canberra.
There are several beautiful parks and Gardens around Canberra. My favourite is the Yarralumla English Garden. There are also small parks hidden in the suburbs of Canberra which I'm still yet to discover. I found out about one the other day but haven't been there or have heard of it so keep an eye out in future posts for photos from there.
2. Lots of walks around nature reserve, trails and mountains.
The hike up Mount Ainslie can be challenging but it's great and you'll be rewarded with beautiful views when you get to the top. I also discovered there's a nice walk at the bottom of Mount Ainslie which is another great place to take your dogs for a walk.
3. Lots of gorgeous places to take dogs and have a picnic
THere's lots of dog friendly outdoor places where you can take your dogs to and have a picnic and enjoy the beautiful scenery too. Some places I love are the National Arboretum, Lennox Gardens and Commonwealth Park.
4. And of course the iconic Lake Burley Griffin.
yes, although we do not have a beach there is the man made Lake Burley Griffin. It's not great for people to swim in but there is an area of the lake in Yarralumla that is dog friendly where you can take the dog for a swim. If not you can always enjoy a walk with your dog by the lake or take your dog in a Go Boat!
There are so many more things about Canberra that I love but as a dog photographer these are some of the things I love about Canberra. Yes, Canberra might be a small capital city compared to Sydney and Melbourne but there's so many beautiful spots to discover in this beautiful city.
And for your beautiful pet portraits to go on your wall, whether you want a beautiful green garden, views of Canberra, or the forest for the backdrop of your pet portraits, I'm sure there is a location we can find for it in Canberra.
Have you been to Canberra or are you a "Ken Behren" aka Canberran?? Let me know below what you love about Canberra.

Elaine - You have made a case for Canberra, with beautiful photos to prove it! Although I have always longed to visit Australia, I am going to have to be reincarnated there, because the longest I can be on a plane without panicking is 11 hours, and even then I have to be comatose. So I have to live vicariously through my Aussie friends!
