I have been working on a book over the last 18 months called Tails of Canberra. This book is part of the Tails of the World™ Collective, an international group of professional pet photographers, each celebrating our local dogs with special edition Tails of . . . coffee table books. One of the places featured in the Tails of Canberra is Civic and Braddon.
Civic and Braddon is the Central Business District (CBD) of Canberra, the capital city of Australia. The great thing is that the city is reasonably dog friendly, in particular the Braddon area where there are lots of cafe and a dog-friendly park nearby.
Dash is such a cute border collie and was so good when we went out to photograph in Civic. Dash is one of the dogs that's featured in the Tails of Canberra book. Being the city centre, it does get quite busy so can be quite distracting for dogs. However, Dash wasn't phased at all and was so good throughout the whole session. Photographing dogs in Civic is quite fun as you get a different backdrop to the usual green and nature I photograph in. There's lots of graffitis in alley ways in the city so we decided to feature these in our urban photos.
The next location we went to was Braddon. Braddon was formerly an industrial area full with car dealerships but it has gone through quite a big transformation. It has now got lots of new establishments and become a very "hipster" location. There are lots of cafes, brewers, roasters and restaurants now in the area. You'll see one of these cafes and eatery in the photos below - Lonsdale Street Roasters and the Mandalay Bus which unfortunately has permanently closed.
Nearby there is also Haig Park where there is a market every weekend and also home to Haig Park Dog Pawty!
Kumpel is another dog featured in my Tails of Canberra book which we used Braddon as the location for our shoot. Kumpel's owner is Polish and Kumpel means buddy or friend. When I photographed Kumpel, he was only 4 months and it was also a very busy evening with people coming out to Braddon for dinner and to hang out. Surprisingly Kumpel was very good and well behaved for a little puppy. He's not as floofy now but still as cute.
Looking back at these images I remember how fun it was to photograph in the Canberra city. Civic and Braddon are great urban locations especially for commercial pet photography. If you're interested in a pet photography session in the hustle and bustle of the Canberra CBD, then contact me or book in for a complimentary pre-session consultation appointment.
